Description

This SACD includes four concertos for cello and orchestra by Luigi Boccherini. They are the most well known among Boccherini's twelve cello concertos (G.479, G.480, G.482, G.483) and they have been recorded in the less usual original version. The Swiss-Taiwanese cellist Wen-Sinn Yang, has made many soloist appearances, amongst others with the well known Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Lorin Maazel. He performs with plenty of musicality and clean technique. The South Tyrolean orchestra called String Academy Bozen includes excellent soloists from Austria, Germany and Italy and is conducted by its leader, the violinist Georg Egger.

A fresh, alive and wonderful performance that can match all expectations and all comparisons. The exceptional qualities of the recording can be fully appreciated in SACD format.

This recording, which was only presented on CD so far (highly recommended in the press) on ARTS MUSIC, will now also be available in wonderful Hybrid SACD format.

Fanfare (01.11.2010)

[Yang's] maturity in tackling these gems shows in every bar, with a finger-fleet dexterity that makes one catch one's breath [...] and his accompanying orchestra is up to every minute in these robust and exceptionally pliant modern-instrument performances. There are some 60-odd recordings available with at least a few Boccherini cello concertos on them [...] I can recommend this one as perhaps the best yet, especially as it comes in warm and detailed surround sound of the highest quality. [...] Yang may well complete the series, and if he does, I guarantee, it will be the one to have. (Steven E. Ritter)

Turok's Choice (01.09.2010)

Four Boccherini concertos are very well played by Wen-Sinn Yang and the Stringacademy Bozen led by Georg Egger. Fine sound.

Audiophile Audition (04.08.2010)

Maybe the best recording yet of these under-appreciated concertos. [... ] The readings by 45-year-old Wen-Sinn Yang are positively the best ever set down of this terric music. [...] I can't recommend these highly enough, and I hope that Yang will finish all twelve-bedrock Boccherini for sure, and they deserve a place on your shelves. (Steven Ritter)

MusicWeb International (10.07.2010)

This is the kind of disc which grows on you as you take greater involvement in what is going on. With such a delicious bed of sound on which to develop his solo line, Wen-Sinn Yang responds with fine delicacy to the thematic morsels which Boccherini so delicately serves up. (Dominy Clements)
