Description
The mandolin repertoire associated with Christmas is extensive, yet at the same time not well-known in this day and age, despite originating at the beginning of the 18th century. The entire family of plucked instruments (including the mandolin, mandola, mandoloncello, bass, lute and guitar) are contained therein, including orchestral compositions.
Turlogh O'Carolan, who is regarded as ''Ireland's only true national composer'' was a harp virtuoso, who was blind from birth. Among his compositions, of which many were simple folk songs, we also find a ''O'Carolan's Concerto'', the result of Italian musical influences, in particular of Antonio Vivaldi.
