Description

At the beginning of 1781 Mozart completed the composition of Idomeneo, re di Creta. After having been postponed several times, the opera was staged in Munich on 29th January of the same year, and was highly successful. With Idomeneo Mozart had finally reached full maturity as a composer of opera.

Die Entführung aus dem Serailis based on a rather banal libretto by Christoph Friedrich Bretzner. In formal terms it is a typical Singspiel of comic nature; an opera, that is, in which musical pieces alternate with recited passages, unlike the ‘dry recitative’ of Italian opera which is sung to the accompaniment of a basso continuo. The Singspiel was originally an eminently popular genre; the sung part was often entrusted to actors, who as singers were little better than honest amateurs, and made up of easily-memorised ariettas of modest length. Die Entführung aus dem Serail, in contrast, is musically very varied, with quite elaborate arias and duets of remarkable length, and the opera requires singers with great vocal range and first-class virtuoso technique.

This radio recording of Die Entführung aus dem Serail, made in Bolzano in 1958 with the orchestra and chorus of the Milan RAI under the artistic direction of Peter Maag.

Enjoy this opera, which has been carefully remastered with 24 bit / 96 kHz. – A must for all Peter Maag fans.

Classics Today (10.03.2011)

artistic quality 9/10 sound quality

"Alessandra Ammara gives us the best recording of Schumann's Album für die Jugend since Michael Endres' reference version. She plays these teaching pieces like real music, and matches Endres' ability to project both the music's simple sentiments and inner sophistication. (...) Arts Music's surround-sound engineering is marvelously full and realistic, and scarcely less so via conventional two-channel stereo playback. Strongly recommended." Jed Distler

Recording of the Month

"Much impressed by Alessandra Ammara’s recording of Giacinto Scelsi’s Preludes, I was more than enthusiastic about hearing her tackle these ‘essence of Romanticism’ masterpieces.
Given state of the art sound with an excellent piano recording, every nuance of Ammara’s performance is held up for close scrutiny, and to my ears she comes up trumps with just about every aspect of Carnaval. (...) Ammara’s touch makes the notes rounded and small, almost reluctant to leave the soundboard of the piano. (...)

This is a performance which leaves no stone unturned, and which grips from beginning to end, and I am full of admiration for Ammara’s craft in achieving this. (...) To my mind this recording is something rather special. There are magical moments all over the place, and the richness of variety in colour, breathtaking sonorities and breadth of expression which Alessandra Ammara brings from a bunch of hammers and metal strings stretched over a plank of wood is something which remains eternally fascinating. (...)

If I don’t choose this as one of my discs of the year, put it down to administrative error."

"Eternally fascinating and really rather special. "                              (Dominy Clements)

[The coloratura] gives a chance for Podles to show off her incredible range, from cavernous chest tones to head tones that scrape the upper reaches of the contralto tessiura. (Lee Passarella)

Pizzicato (30.03.2010)

"Mit ihrer weitgestreckten, wunderbar warmen und voll tönenden Altstimme ist die Polin Ewa Podles eine ideale Besetzung, nicht zuletzt weil sie auch darstellerisch exzellent ist undmit ihren vielfältigen expressiven Möglichkeiten den Orfeo ganz hervorragend porträtiert. (...) Ewa Podles (...) eine Sängerin die zur Weltspitze gehört"

Audiophile Audition:

"String tone is glorious and silky in the disc, no hint at all of the annoying edginess that afflicts some standard Cds of string ensembles."

www.musicweb-international.com (23.03.2010)

"The Italian band, always alluring, bring a ray of Mediterranean sunshine to the proceedings as well. But it’s the soloist who takes the palm, with superb articulation and purity of tone. Whether it’s leaps or trills, high or low, Marzi sails through this music with ease. It’s very impressive, both as a performance and as a recording."

"Performance, sound and presentation all speak of high production values. A feast for all sax fans. "

Classcial Net (23.03.2010)

Mario Manzi ozzes out some beautiful worlds of sound, and although Schellenberger keeps a measured hold on proceedings, he always allows the soloist to display his virtuosic abilities to the full. Outstanding notes and the superb 5.1 multichannel sound are also high points of this marvelous SACD.
