Description

Luisa Miller has long been relegated to a secondary level in Verdi’s production by the incumbent ''Rigoletto-Trovatore-Traviata'' triology. But in the 1970s this unjustly underrated title celebrated its reappraisal as a number of great artists chose to include it among their favourites. Thus singers like Caballé, Scotto, Ricciarelli on the one hand, and Pavarotti, Domingo and Carreras on the other hand created the opportunities for reflecting on the beauty of an opera that is totally modern and prefigures many future masterpieces.

The now released CD-set on ARTS ARCHIVES is a fascinating live-recording with an outstanding cast, that offers a most distinctive immediacy, in which the alchemy of the recording studio is outclassed by an interpretation we admire in all its freshness of performance and its searing dramatic truth. The unforgotten Swiss conductor Peter Maag confirms himself as a very subtle interpreter, extremely ductile in grasping the shifting moods of the opera. And last but not least it is elaborated by the voice of Luciano Pavarotti, who was in peak form and at the height of worldwide popularity in 1974.

Enjoy this opera, which has been carefully remastered with 24 bit / 96 kHz. – A must for all Peter Maag and  Luciano Pavarotti fans.

Felix Stephan
