Description

Why a new recording of the complete symphonies of Beethoven? Obviously because they remain ever-loved and continue to be best sellers. But ours are really new recordings of these famous symphonies. We asked one of the greatest conductors of the old generation, Peter Maag, to perform the complete symphonies following the modern demand of philology. We achieved as a result an exciting blend of the old way and the new way to perform Beethoven, utilizing an enthusiastic chamber orchestra (Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto - recordings for Teldec, Denon, Claves and others). We remind you also that Peter Maag has never recorded Beethoven's symphonies, though he was a
pupil of Furtw„ngler and though he conducted these same symphonies in many hundreds of concerts during his long artistic career. The ninth symphony was recorded live in the huge Basilica di S. Antonio in Padova as opening event of the celebrations of the 800th anniversary of S. Antonio, the most famous of all saints. (Cover photo illustrates this night.) The four soloists are recognized worldwide as specialists of this music and the chorus is an excellent ensemble that performs in a philological mood, as it was for Schoenberg Chor under Harnoncourt's conducting.

The fifth symphony, recorded after live performances in Padova, is one of the most exciting interpretations in recent years. Faced with a chamber orchestra, Maag recorded a thrilling performance with plenty of excitement. His quiet and luminous Sixth, recorded live, makes a wonderful coupling for a generous timing (more than 79 ' !).

Critics acclaimed Peter Maag and the orchestra: 'An impetuous and involving Beethoven', 'One of the best Fifth Symphony to date', 'The Ninth was the event of St. Antonio's year'.

The complete cyclus is available in an elegant box containing the five single CDs.
