Description

The two symphonies on this disk share the use of sung text, which stands in contrary to most of the other Shostakovich Symphonies. The texts chosen for the construction of the fourteenth symphony are all presented in the Russian language which Shostakovich preferred most. They all point to an extremely negative vision of death, with echoes of desperation, solitude and images of repression.

The third Symphony however, which is also known as “The First of May”, seems to face up to the contrast between Shostakovich’s personality that tended towards pessimism, and the growing demand for optimism at all costs, as result of the splendours of the Revolution and the new Stalin model. As we all know, this also marks the well-known moment of serious rupture between the musician and the Soviet cultural establishment.

Like no other Oleg Caetani manages repeatedly to capture the composer’s mood. In this he is supported by the two soloists Marina Poplavskaya and Mikhail Davidov as well as the Coro and Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi. Please look forward to another splendid DSD 5+1 multichannel Hybrid SACD from ARTS!

Part of the Box-Set 47850-8:

"Oleg Caetani manages to draw dramatic pictographic interpretations. Caetani is a maestro when in comes to compile opposed characters"
