Dmitri Shostakovich was nearly 30 years old when he wrote his 4th Symphony. During this time he had to fear for his life because his opera „Lady Macbeth of Mzensk“ had angered Stalin. This might be the reason why the 4th Symphony was only performed for the first time in 1961, 25 years upon completion.
With this symphony Shostakovich composed an „volcanic eruption“ (Boris Schwarz), which is neither with its boldness nor with its modernity ranking behind the “explosve” „Le Sacre du Printemps“ from Igor Stravinsky or of Prokofiev ’s „Scythian Suite“.
Let yourself be swept away from these intoxicating sounds. Due to the composers 100th birthday this recording is now re-released on an ARTS HybridSACD with an unbeatable DSD 5+1 multichannel surround sound!
This release is also part of the 10 HybridSACD Shostakovich Box 47850-8.

Part of the Box-Set 47850-8:
"Oleg Caetani manages to draw dramatic pictographic interpretations. Caetani is a maestro when in comes to compile opposed characters"
