One mark of a great musician is the ability to play music intended for children without condescending to it. Robert Schumann's album of pieces written for his three daughters is a classic example of a collection that could be thoughtlessly tossed-off by a pianist unable or unwilling to look past the surface simplicity to the emotional depth beneath this music, but luckily, Alessandra Ammara is not that kind of pianist. On the contrary: she fully brings out the rich expressiveness of Schumann's apparently functional pieces and makes them a complete delight to listen to. Even when the pedagogical bones are visible, she clothes them in warm musical flesh. Recommended to all piano collections. (RA)
