William Matteuzzi
William Matteuzzi was born in Bologna, where he began his vocal training with the tenor Paride Venturi at the age of 17. This phase he was able to expand and perfect as a result of his productive acquaintance with Rodolfo Celletti. Following his debut at the studio theatre of As.Li.Co. in Milan in December 1979, he won the Milan singing competition "Enrico Caruso" in 1980. Since then he has performed at all important theatres of the world and has interpreted approximately 100 different roles. He directed particular attention to the bel canto repertoire and especially to Rossini. It is therefore no coincidence that he contributed to the modern re-discovery of "Il viaggio a Reims" and "Ricciardo e Zoraide", and is regarded as one of the most important interpreters of both Rossini’s serious and lighter works.
His voice is characterised by an extremely high timbre, yet always retains a certain dark shimmer, reminiscent of that of a tenore contraltino from the 19th century.
Matteuzzi has recorded the operas Armida, Il matrimonio segreto, La sonnambula and Nina o sia la pazza per amore for ARTS. Some of his other recordings are available from Decca, EMI, RCA, Sony, Erato and Opera Rara.
