The Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi has become one of Italy's most important symphonic orchestras. In July 1999 Riccardo Chailly accepted the position of Music Director of the orchestra, while continuing to conduct the prestigious Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam. Under his leadership the Orchestra has become a highly flexible and versatile group, performing a repertoire which ranges from Bach to the main composers of nineteenth-century symphonic music and offering new programmes combining classical music with more unusual repertoire. In October 1999 Mr. Chailly, performing the Symphony No. 2 Resurrection by Mahler, inaugurated the Auditorium of Milan, the city's new concert hall and the Orchestra's new musical home. With excellent aesthetic, technological and acoustic characteristics, the Auditorium is among the best concert halls in Italy. Besides the prestigious presence of Riccardo Chailly as Music Director, the Orchestra can claim Carlo Maria Giulini as Conductor Emeritus, Luciano Berio as Honorary Conductor, Claus Peter Flor as Principal Guest Conductor.
The Orchestra was founded in 1993 by Vladimir Delman and has been conducted among others by Georges Prętre, Riccardo Muti, Valery Gergiev, Christopher Hogwood, Rudolf Barshai, Peter Maag, Daniele Gatti, and has played with soloists such as Martha Argerich, Mstislav Rostropovich, Vadim Repin, Lynn Harrell, Viktoria Mullova, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Salvatore Accardo, Mario Brunello, Alexander Toradze. The Orchestra has been invited by the Spoleto Festival to be Orchestra in residence in 2002 and regularly tours in Europe, America and Japan. Besides offering the complete cyclus of Shostakovich's symphonies with Oleg Caetani for ARTS MUSIC, the orchestra has a stable collaboration with record companies such as Decca and Deutsche Grammophon. Among the recent releases, recordings of Verdi's and Rossini's works conducted by Chailly and recitals with Angela Gheorghiu, Juan Diego Floréz and Placido Domingo. These recordings got a wide critical acclaim and won some of the most prestigious awards such as Gramophone Award, Classic FM People's Choice, Choc de l'Année.
