Melodi Cantores

In the first volume of his Syntagma Musicum (1619), Michael Praetorius quotes a definition by Severinus Boethius, according to whom "Melodi Cantores" (''melody singers'') are the most carefully selected among all the monks able to perform the musical repertoire in a monastery. The Ensemble was established in 2006 by Elena Sartori in order to make a first reconstruction, performance and recording of Father Giovanni Battista Martini's Requiem ever attempted, in cooperation with the Conservatory and the University of Bologna. An open group in nature, since then the Ensemble has had an intense public activity, particularly focussing on the discovery of hidden repertoires and carrying out research. They have been quickly shifting from ancient pieces to contemporary experiments and vice versa. In 2007 the Alighieri Theatre of Ravenna performed Orpheus and Eurydice by Gluck, directed by Graham Vick for the opera programmes of the Theatres of Ravenna, Ferrara, Reggio Emilia, Modena and Pisa. The audience and critics welcomed it enthusiastically and the publication Early Music defined it ''an extraordinary experiment of recreation of the opera theatre''. The Melodi Cantores Ensemble was invited to perform the Monastic Chorus in its first Italian performance, in the form of a concert of Paul Hindemith’s Opera called Sancta Susanna, conducted by Riccardo Muti for Ravenna Festival 2005, later on reinterpreted in a scenic version in 2012. In March 2008 it received a special mention in the magazine Musica for the recording of Domenico Scarlatti's Masses and Stabat Mater for 10 voices, made for the 250th anniversary of the composer's death. In September 2008, for Sagra Musicale Malatestiana of Rimini, the chorus performed Water Passion after St. Matthew by Tan Dun, for the first time ever, directed by Denis Krief. The Ensemble was invited to take part in the composition of scenic music for the Opera Futura project (directed by Luigi de Angelis), performed at the Zagreb Biennial Festival of Contemporary Music of Zagreb, to the Municipal Theatre of Ferrara, the Municipal Theatre of Modena, the Valli Theatre of Reggio Emilia and the Municipal Theatre of Bologna. It also made the first recording ever of G.B. Pergolesi's Psalms with original instruments for the magazine Amadeus, produced for Ravenna Festival and MITO Settembremusica of Turin. In 2012 it will perform the opera The Planets op.32 by Gustav Holt, directed by Dennis Russe Davies for Ravenna Festival 2012.
